About The Way You Look Tonight
As a very successful private investigator who has caught most of the cheaters in Seattle with their pants down, Rafe Sullivan believes true, lasting love only happens once in a blue moon. Needing to get away from the city to clear his head, he finds the lake house where he spent the best summers of his life is now a wreck…but the sweet girl next door is all grown up and prettier than anything he’s ever seen.
While Brooke Jansen is happy making and selling chocolate truffles in her small Pacific Northwest lake town, she secretly longs to experience something wild. So when her favorite “Wild Sullivan” moves in again next door after more than a decade away, and sparks fly between them, she can’t stop wondering if being bad is really as good as it always seemed…and just how long it will be before she can find out.
But when their summer fling quickly spirals into deeper emotions than either of them were expecting, can they survive the heat between them? Or will Rafe make the biggest mistake of his life and end up losing the best thing that’s ever happened to him?
Hip, hip, hooray for more Sullivans! I haven’t read the entire series of the California Sullivans (there’s so many), but I have loved every single one I did read.
Tip: The reason I haven’t read them all, and gave up reading them in order, is because they’re frequently on sale and are lendable. So I just buy and read them in the order that they’re on sale or are lent to me via BookLending.com. With series like this, where books can be read as standalone, I recommend this method – you’ll end up saving a lot of money!
Anyway, the one thing that I sometimes don’t like with the Sullivan books is that they’re sometimes very sappy; the sugary sweet kind of romance. I can only take that in small measures.
But The Way You Look Tonight was definitely the least sappy book I’ve read by Bella so far!
I will knock down one star because their romance felt very rushed. Yes, they knew each other as kids, but they hadn’t connected since before Brooke was even a teenager. So yeah, it would have been easy to fall back into a good friendship, but dropping the L-bomb after a week of knowing each other as adults struck me as too much too soon.
Another issue I had was all the talk about kinkiness. There’s a hilarious episode of Will & Grace (one of my favorite shows) where Grace tries to convince her friends she’s capable of kink. She calls herself kinky, and either Will or Karen responds, “No one who’s actually kinky uses the word kinky!” I gotta say, that makes sense. So Brooke constantly saying things about being kinky felt forced and awkward. If you’re really into kink, you don’t consider it kinky; you consider it normal.
So the number of times the words “kinky” and “wild” were used made sure the words no longer held meaning in the book.
But other than that, Brooke and Rafe’s chemistry was palpable, and I loved how they were comparing their relationship to truffles all the time, and that Brooke was so close with the family.
*I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
