About The Hooker and the Hermit:

New York’s Finest

February 14, 2015

LADIES AND GENTS! I have an announcement! You know that guy I featured on my blog a few months ago? The really, really hot Irish rugby player who plays the position of ‘hooker’ in the RLI (Rugby League International)? The one with the questionable fashion choices leading me to ask whether he was the lovechild of a leprechaun and a hobbit? The one with the anger management issues and the body of a gladiator and the face of a movie star? Ronan Fitzpatrick? Yeah, that guy.

Well, I have a confession to make…

THE HERMIT

Annie Catrel, social media expert extraordinaire at Davidson & Croft Media and clandestine celebrity blogger, can make anyone shine in the court of public opinion. She is the Socialmedialite, anonymous creator of New York’s Finest and the internet’s darling. Virtual reality is Annie’s forte, but actual reality? Not so much.

THE HOOKER

Ronan Fitzpatrick, aka the best hooker the world of rugby has seen in decades, despises the media—social or otherwise. The press has spun a web of lies depicting him as rugby’s wild and reckless bad boy.

Suspended from his team, Ronan has come to Manhattan to escape the drama, lay low, fly under the radar. Only, Ronan isn’t easy to overlook, and he can’t escape the notice of the Socialmedialite…

THE PLAN

When Ronan is sent to Davidson & Croft Media to reshape his public image, he never expects to cross paths with shy but beautiful Annie, nor does he expect his fierce attraction to her. He couldn’t be happier when her boss suggests pairing them together.

What lengths will Annie take to keep her virtual identity concealed? And what happens when the hooker discovers who the hermit really is?

The Hooker and the Hermit is a collaboration between authors L.H. Cosway and Penny Reid, is a full length 100k word novel, and is a standalone.

My Review:

If someone told me I would meet a character, even one that Penny Reid helped create, that I had a bigger girl crush on than I do for various members of “that infamous knitting group” from the Knitting in the City series, I would have called you cray cray. Even with all the other characters my favorite authors write, I love them in a different, less girl crushy way than I do with the knitting ladies.

But that was before Annie Catrel. (B.A.C., for future reference. Not to be confused with blood-alcohol concentration.)

I loved her so hard, and related to her like whoa. A lot of people think introverts aren’t suited for jobs in communication, like PR, marketing and social media. But guess what? Annie Catrel rocks it, and so can I! What, what!

This might now be my top #2 Penny book ever, and that’s really saying something since I reread them all several times a year. I just love the comedy that comes from one outgoing person and one shy person *fallin in luuuurve*.

I also related to Annie a lot, the shy aspects of her. Though it did sort of pick at a pet peeve of mine, where introvert is used as a synonym for “shy” or “awkward,” instead of describing the state of introversion. But that’s a really weird and specific pet peeve, so I can’t hold it against this books because also it was soooo outweighed by good. So outweighed that when talking about it my ramble turns to bumble and I forget punctuation exists.

This book made me want to leave notes in the Kindle app. I’m a highlighter aficionado, but I rarely make notes. Since I read the book awhile before the release, and wanted to get out the feels, I was thinking of doing a “pre-review” type thing that was basically just publishing those notes and adding some context to get the joke, but not enough to be a spoiler. I think it’s a really cool idea and I still want to do it. But for this book, that would have been its own 100k word novel.

And Ronan was great, too. As a social media marketer, I found his technophobia quite adorable, and his reactions to social media and stuff sometimes reminded me of my own dinosaur boyfriend (he thinks he’s super cool, sophisticated, and high tech because he recently got his first smartphone).

Of course, that wasn’t as likeable as his dirty talk was. 😉

Lordy, lordy, that boy can talk.

This is getting long and rambley, so oops. Sorry bout that. Kind of. I’ll stop now though. Go read this book. Kthxbi.

Sidebar: I feel like I need to take the “how to take a creeper photo” things at the beginning of each chapter, and bucket list that sh*t.

About Penny Reid:

SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.

  1. I think I’ve only read one book from each of these two authors but I really enjoyed both of them. And so when I heard that they were doing a book together, what? of course I have to read it. Unfortunately, it’s been sitting on my TBR list at the moment. But I will definitely get to it soon. Thanks for the review. 🙂
