Bloggiesta Challenge: Create Your Mention Dashboard

Hey Bloggiesta-goers! I was gone for awhile now I’m back again 😛 with another mini-challenge for you. For more to add to your to-do list, check out how to build your email list and how to create a blogging schedule.

Your blog’s brand and community is spread out over dozens of platforms. There’s your own website, as well as any websites mentioning or linking to your posts. Then there’s your Facebook page, and the pages and profiles of anyone who interacts with it. Add Twitter to the mix, then mix in Goodreads, Google, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, and the list goes on.

Do you really want to have to check in on each of those platforms individually?


I didn’t think so.

Luckily there are enough tools that bring everything into one place. I do like Hootsuite and TweetDeck, but they’re focused on social. And if you’re active in the blogging community (and if you’re participating in challenges like this, you definitely are), other blogs will be talking about you. So then there’s stuff like Google Alerts, but that’s getting more unpredictable by the week.

If you want to see everyone mentioning you anywhere, try Mention.

It’s a great social listening tool that I’ve loved for years. Then in April I started loving them a lot more when they hired me. Yup, disclosure time. I work full-time there. Now that that housekeeping is out of the way…

How Mention Works

The core of Mention is based on alerts and mentions. Alerts are pretty much searches you set up for a certain keyword or set of keywords, and mentions are the results it brings in. So for keeping track of people talking about Book Bumblings, I have an alert set up for the keyword “Book Bumblings.” And whenever that shows up on a website or one of the other places I’ve set my alert to look at, a new mention comes in:


There’s also fun features like and/or/negative keywords, influencer scoring, tagging and favoriting your mentions, filtering your mention feed, and stuff like that. I’m not going to write in detail about that in this post, but you can check out all the details here.

As a book blogger, your favorite feature will probably be the ability to react to mentions from within the app. For blog mentions with Disqus comments installed, you can comment right there. For Facebook, you can like, comment on, or share a post. Similar deal with Twitter. You see where I’m going with this.

Take, for example, a challenge like Bloggiesta or BookBlogWriMo. A lot of conversations are going to be happening:

  • The actual challenge posts themselves, taking places on blogs.
  • Bloggers sharing those blog posts on social media.
  • Readers sharing those posts from the bloggers they follow on social.
  • People talking about the challenge on social, such as discussions, questions, progress updates, and Twitter chats.

Being able to centralize all of that in one place is awesome.

Other Things You Can Do


Creating a hub for all of your notifications isn’t the only thing you can do. You can monitor any topic as long as you can come up with a few keywords about it. Here are some other things I use alerts for:

  • Following my favorite hashtags. These are mostly the hashtags for challenges I host and/or participate in. You can take a look in the screenshot above – I use “or” keywords to curate them all into one stream.
  • Finding new websites and conversations about book blogging. I have one alert that looks for the keywords “book blogger” and “book blogging.” Seeing what other people are talking about keeps me entertained with good reading, helps me join interesting conversations, and makes it easier to come up with post ideas.
  • Following favorite authors. This is a fun one. For a time, I had an alert going with a few of my favorite authors set up as “or” keywords, so I could see all the reviews being published about them, and all the fandom on social media. I actually deleted it because I was getting sucked in and staying up until 3 am, replying to people fangirling over Cora Carmack – and doing more fangirling than normal myself.

Your Challenge, Should You Choose to Accept It


  1. Create a Mention account here.
  2. Set up an alert to monitor everyone talking about the Bloggiesta. 🙂 To do this, enter “Bloggiesta” as the keyword you’d like to monitor. If you’d like, customize it further with and/or keywords and narrow down which sources your alert will look at.
  3. Throughout the long weekend, check in on your alert to find other participants. Comment on a few other people’s to-do lists, reply to tweets from the Twitter chats (even if you can’t make it live), etc.

Of course, you can also monitor other stuff. But you’re going to want to check in on the Bloggiesta anyway, and this makes it a lot easier. 🙂

  1. I’ve been neglecting my blog for so long that I doubt I’m getting mentioned anywhere much, but this sounds interesting! I confess I’d never heard of Mention before. Now that I have, I’ll probably see it MENTIONED everywhere! 😉

    • Haha I hope you do see it everywhere – that means I’m doing my job. 😛 And you’d be surprised – I found a lot of random book reviews that would link to my own review of the book, even if it was from more than a year ago!
