Welcome to day 26 of #BookBlogWriMo! Tonight we’re talking about other forms of entertainment.
I’m just an all-around entertainment whore. Books, magazines, movies, TV, theater, dance…I love it all. So this post is a fun way to talk about other fictional worlds I like to get lost in. The original topic was just books and movies, but I actually feel healthy enough to write a good post for the first time in awhile, so I’m just gonna keep going.
Dance
I started dancing at age 2 and by the time I was 12, one class a week just wasn’t enough. I am a dancer through and through. I would perform for anyone who would watch me. The living room was my stage.
Around sixth grade, I started taking extra classes and joined my dance studio’s ballet company to perform in the Nutcracker. By eighth grade, I was at the studio 5 nights a week and traveling all over the mid-Atlantic for competitions.
By high school, I was spending as much time at the studio as most do at their full-time jobs. 4-6 hours per weekday and 8-10 hours on weekends in technique classes, rehearsals, choreography sessions, and teaching youngsters.
Ankle injuries ended all that. After my first reconstruction surgery, I tried going back for awhile and stay on my school’s dance team. But that just led to another reconstruction less than a year later. I can’t wear heels or walk/stand for a long period of time, let alone dance. I’ll probably keep needing surgeries since my ankles just suck. But dance will always be something I appreciate.
Movies
My favorite movies are comedies, romcoms, dance movies, Old Hollywood, and musicals. And anything John Hughes or something equally 80’s-tastic. Some of my favorites:
- Breakfast at Tiffany’s
- Pretty in Pink
- Footloose
- Pitch Perfect
- Top Gun
- Some Like It Hot
- The Wizard of Oz
- Grease
- And so many more!
TV
This is the one addiction that’s probably just as bad as my book obsession.
Shows I watch that are currently on the air:
- Once Upon a Time
- Revenge
- Mad Men
- The Blacklist
- Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
- New Girl
- The Mindy Project
- Marry Me
- Glee
- Grey’s Anatomy
- Scandal
- How to Get Away with Murder
- Parks and Rec
- Big Bang Theory
- Doctor Who
But I also watch a lot of shows on Netflix and DVD. The only way I can fall asleep is to have an episode I’ve seen a hundred times before playing as background noise, or my brain won’t turn off Favorite off-the-air shows to binge watch on DVD or Netflix:
- Friends
- Will & Grace
- Happy Endings
- 30 Rock
- I Love Lucy
- Happy Days
- Big Bang Theory
- The O.C.
- Saved by the Bell
Theater
I’m just a Broadway baby! I’ve always loved it. I still remember more about Footloose: The Musical more than any other Broadway show I’ve ever seen, because it was the first one I ever saw. I like old Gershwin stuff just as much as newer, edgier stuff. Some of my all time favorite shows:
- Footloose: The Musical
- Rent
- Newsies
- Mamma Mia
- 42nd Street
- Thoroughly Modern Millie
I’m sure that after the beginning of the post, you’re not surprised that these are all dance-heavy shows. 🙂
